Training Philosophy

Our Balanced Training Philosophy

At RC Canine Academy, we use a blend of scientifically supported methods and seasoned expertise to teach dogs how to respond confidently to commands and navigate various situations. This balanced approach eliminates confusion, reducing unwanted behaviors like chewing, barking, or pulling. By focusing on what dogs should do, we replace frustration with clarity, creating a foundation for positive, obedient behavior.
Our training not only resolves behavioral challenges but also cultivates a joyful, trust-based relationship between you and your dog. Through clear communication and mutual understanding, your dog becomes an enthusiastic partner in your daily life, free to enjoy their environment while behaving reliably. This approach grants dogs greater freedom to explore and engage while giving owners the confidence to lead with ease.

Why We Reject Conflict-Based and Treat-Only Approaches

Many training methods focus solely on correcting what dogs do wrong—pulling on the leash, jumping, or chasing distractions. Some trainers advocate for dominance-based techniques, urging owners to assert control through frequent, often harsh corrections. While this may yield results, it creates conflict, stress, and mistrust for both dog and owner. It also overlooks rewarding correct behaviors, leaving dogs confused about what’s expected and often leading to more problem behaviors.
Conversely, a “purely positive” approach reliant on endless treats may seem conflict-free but proves unreliable over time. Treats can mask issues rather than address them, fostering a relationship based on bribery rather than genuine trust and respect. While treats are useful for introducing behaviors, dogs trained this way may struggle to perform without food as a lure, limiting their true understanding and reliability in tough situations.
At RC Canine Academy, we shift the focus to balanced training that teaches dogs what to do, not just what to avoid. We reward appropriate behaviors to build confidence and clarity while using fair, minimal corrections when needed. This approach ensures dogs learn reliably, even without treats, and fosters a relationship of mutual respect. Owners gain the tools to lead confidently, and dogs earn the freedom to thrive in a world they understand.

Our Required Equipment List

All items Listed Below are included in any of our introductory training programs and are essential to your success in building a better relationship with your furry friend.

6′ Leather Leash

A good Leash is important not only for making corrections and keeping your dog safe but also for reliability in tough situations. The leashes we use are manufactured to last and withstand day in and day out training for years to come.

Treat Pouch

When good behaviors are presented, we need to be able to delivers rewards swiftly to our dogs to show them they are doing the right thing and make good associations this is where a good treat pouch comes in handy! The treat pouches we provide have a hinged wide-opening design meant to keep the pouch easily accessible and make grabbing another treat easy and efficient.

Prong Collar

We use the Herm Sprenger prong collars with our all of dogs as an extra correction tool when starting out. Just in case your e-collar is stuck on the charger or misplaced shouldn’t mean you can’t still maintain control in tough training scenarios with ease. We start all of our dogs here with a prong collar on a 6-foot leash prior to moving on towards an e-collar as the corrective sensation the prong collar provides mimics the same corrections given to dogs as puppies by their mother and also by other dogs in a pack setting. We strictly only use Herm Spreger for its beveled edges and reliability over time due to its unmatched construction.

Remote E-Collar

We use e-collars in training as a communication device for dogs typically at lower settings to provide feedback to dogs and corrections when needed. We Use the FT-330 from E-collar Technologies for its discreetness and unmatched features such as a wireless finger button, 1/2-mile range, waterproof collar and remote, nighttime tracking light, and stimulation levels from 1-100 to be able to tailor the blunt stim sensation to the exact level needed for your specific dog.

Raised Dog Bed

A raised dog bed is such a powerful and underutilized tool that more dog parents should be using. Giving your dog a safe place to relax and unwind and learn personal boundaries is a great and healthy part of responsible dog ownership. When used in training a raised dog bed can be an invisible barrier when having company over that may be scared or allergic, when eating dinner to avoid begging, or while answering the door to avoid door dashing and unwanted interactions while you’re grabbing that pizza or package just to name a few. Having a place to send your dog that they must stay on and maintain gives you a positive solution to common problems and also shows your dog that he doesn’t always need to be the center of attention but also doesn’t make you have to lock him in a room or a crate when you just can’t keep 100% of your attention geared towards him.
